Academic Support Coach

Job Description

Academic Support Coaches work under the leadership of the Academic Development & Instruction Lead. In this role, Academic Support Coaches work with students in either a one-on-one or small group setting to help them understand key concepts, especially those that are foundational, and teach skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions. Coaches also demonstrate academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics. Coaches conduct periodic subject based assessments to track progress, identify areas of improvement and help set goals for instruction. Coaches follow a sequence of steps and prewritten instructional guides when working with students and take detailed anecdotal notes during each session. Coaches must follow all plans systematically and use data collected during each lesson to determine next steps. Coaches also provide students positive, specific and constructive feedback and offer feedback on progress to students’ parents and teachers where appropriate.

Academic Coaches work closely with and build long-term relationships with students and their families. It is critical that they provide exceptional customer service, model appropriate behaviors, instill confidence, build independence in each student, and are knowledgeable about the subject matter they teach. Coaches are also responsible for gathering all needed materials prior to each instructional lesson and returning all files and materials to the appropriate area after each session. Coaches must maintain professional relationships with families and students and should not engage in relationships outside of those outlined in this description.
